However, we want to do more than just leave our customers with a beautifully clean carpet to enjoy. We also want to help our customers get more from their clean carpets, making them last longer after being professionally cleaned. We thought our customers might appreciate a few tips that we’ve learned over the years that could help. These tips for how to look after a new carpet won’t make it last forever, but if you stick to them you’ll certainly get a few months more enjoyment from your carpet. Of course, these tips equally apply to freshly cleaned carpets as well as new ones, so read on to find out how to get a little more from yours.
How to vacuum clean your carpet, better
Vacuum cleaning a carpet might seem like a very simple thing to do and a lot of the time it is. But you might be surprised at how much more effective it can be if you follow a few simple steps that so many people forget.
Firstly, check the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner. Whether it’s an extension to get into the corners or a large unit that rolls around the floor, the suction opening can quickly gather a lot of dust and hair trapped in its bristles and spokes. If you want to get more from your carpet, keep this end of the vacuum cleaner free of dirt and obstructions, otherwise you could potentially be working dust and hair deeper into the fibres of the carpet – exactly the opposite of what you want.
The other thing to watch out for is overfilling the bag or the dust collection chamber. Yes, emptying this is definitely the least fun part of the whole process, but if it is not done regularly the vacuum cleaner will gradually lose its ability to gather up dust and you’ll simply end up transferring it from room to room. How often should you vacuum clean your carpet? Twice a week, don’t put it off either!
Move your furniture and rugs to keep the colour of your carpet even
It can feel like a lot of effort to move a large sofa, armchair or rug around the room, but if you’ve got the space to do so we highly recommend you do it. The problem with keeping all this stuff in the same position for months on end is that the carpet will fade unevenly. A slight fading is entirely natural, this is just what happens when natural light containing UV rays falls upon a surface many hundreds of times. Normally this fading is subtle enough to be invisible, but if a large piece of furniture has been shielding the carpet for many months the change may appear more pronounced. This can be especially frustrating if you’ve just paid for a new carpet. Moving things around a little will prevent this and also ensure that dust doesn’t have too much of a chance to collect underneath them and filthy up that nice clean carpet.
Use a fabric protector to protect your carpet from spills
One of the best things you can do to protect your carpet is to apply some sort of fabric or stain prevention treatment to it. We actually offer our own Scotchgard fabric protection service, which we can apply after cleaning your carpet if you wish. There are many options on the market but we have always found Scotchgard to be the best. These treatments create a microscopic layer of protection for your carpet and can also be used on sofas, chairs and other upholstery. The microscopic coating can barely be noticed, but if applied correctly will resist and repel liquid spills long enough for them to be cleaned up, therefore protecting the carpet from marks and stains.
How to deal with spills properly to protect your carpet for longer
This tip is an oldie but it bears repeating. Even if your carpet is protected with Scotchgard, there is a right way and a wrong way to deal with spills that you should always follow. The number one rule of spills is to blot, not scrub. The aim here is to use an absorbent material, a paper towel for example, to soak up the spilled liquid and lift it away from the sensitive fibres of the carpet. Scrubbing at a spill will only succeed in pushing it deeper into the pile and increase the chances of stains, smells that are difficult to remove and discolouration.
Know when it is time to hire a professional carpet cleaner
Most carpet manufacturers say that their carpets should be professionally cleaned once a year. Part of the trick of keeping your carpets in the best possible condition is recognising when it’s time to get a professional in to recondition it with top quality equipment and carpet shampoo. But how do you know when the right time to do this is?
The first thing to ask is, how long ago was the carpet cleaned? Longer than a year means it’s definitely time to get a pro in. Even if it doesn’t appear especially dirty, you are bound to be delighted with the results; fresh smelling, bright, bouncy fibres, full of life.
The other thing to think about is what sort of usage the carpet gets. If you have pets or young children, it may be better to bring in a professional with a steam cleaning machine a little more frequently, perhaps a couple of times a year. This is the best way to protect your family against any possible build up of bacteria from outside soils. The heat kills any possible contaminants and the suction removes them.
