Most of us look forward to summer, but for allergy sufferers this time of year can often be very uncomfortable. If you can’t find any relief from your allergies even in the comfort of your own home, read on for some advice that will help to alleviate the problem!
The American Association of Asthma and Immunology defines the word allergy as: “a chronic condition involving an abnormal reaction to an ordinarily harmless substance called an allergen.” Those of us who suffer from allergies produce an immune response to what our bodies see as foreign invaders- these irritants can be anything from mould and dust mites in the home to pollen brought in from outside, often the main offender at this time of year.
Many people buy products such as antihistamines to help minimise the immune response to allergens, but there are many ways you can reduce the amount of allergens interacting with you in the first place.
Remove mould from your bathroom
This is an extremely common problem, and mould is one of the major triggers of allergies. It thrives in damp, warm environments like your bathroom and often grows in places, such as behind the toilet, where it wouldn’t be easily spotted. This site has some great advice to help you tackle bathroom mould.
Invest in a decent vacuum cleaner
Getting a vacuum with a HEPA-rated filter is a must if you suffer from allergies. These filters prevent the vacuum from releasing any of the dust you have just sucked up back into the air, something that happens all too often with cheaper models.
Get a dehumidifier
Mould doesn’t just form in the bathroom, and prevention is the key to tackling many cleaning jobs. If you get a dehumidifier for your home it will reduce the amount of moisture in the air, which in turn will reduce the risk of mould formation.
Have your upholstery and carpets properly cleaned
The other steps won’t mean much for your allergies if you don’t have your carpets and upholstery professionally cleaned at least once every year.
